Kickstarter Projects Worth Backing! - 7/28/11

There has been a rash of great titles that have found their way onto the Kickstarter site. I can't highlight all of them for you here, so I'll pick a couple that I think are a few of the best. I really hope that this trend continues as I love to see the underdog succeed and this can really only continue to help our industry grow in scope of content and hopefully player base as we hit larger target audiences. One of the limitations of this service is that advertising for these campaigns will mostly have to be by word of mouth, hopefully that's where I can come in. Please, if you see a title that I advertise on here, make sure you tell your friends. That is the only way we will continue get great independent titles to market.

Okay, so there are many things that stand out to me when looking at Far West. One, it is a theme that has hardly any content associated with it; that is, "Spaghetti Western and Chinese Wuxia" mixed with steam punk elements. Two, the plan is to take this project to multiple platforms. While the crew over at Adamant Entertainment haven't really divulged how far they plan on taking it, it does have an air of L5R about it with RPG, card game, board game, books, etc. Currently the project exists on a website level and soon to be tabletop RPG. Hop on board of Far West while it's early, I don't think you will regret it. Oh, and the artwork is freakin' fantastic.

Next is Flash Point: Fire Rescue (henceforth referred to as FPFR). FPFR is a cooperative board game in which players must run into a burning house and rescue the occupants all while the fire grows and spreads to adjoining spaces and rooms. This is done by using action points to move and perform basic actions in the game. There are also different specialists in the game that provide different types of bonuses to the players. The game will come with different difficulty levels and setups to help promote replayability and advancement. This title reminds me of a Forbidden Island or Pandemic style title where players must work together as different types of specialists as their world quickly falls apart around them. If FPFR is anything like that at all, sign us up!

And then there is Lyssan. Lyssan is a map control board game where players control different unit types to create strategies to overwhelm your opponents into submission. This is not just through military style conquest, Lyssan also includes diplomacy and hirelings. With different types of victory conditions, the strategies and play experiences should change from session to session. This looks like it should fit well with wargamers and players who enjoy strategic style euro titles. Be careful who you play with though, there is plenty of opportunity for alliances and backstabbing.
