WoW TCG Damage Dice Review

WoW TCG TreasureChestWe didn’t know what we should have expected from the WoW TCG Damage Dice [Amazon, Funagain], and Upper Deck accessory product that's a sideshow to the formidable WoW TCG. After all – it’s just a box, with dice in it. It’s a Box O’ Dice. Pure and simple. But to be honest, we thought it would be something at least a little bit cooler that it actually is.

The Good Points
It’s a handy little dice carrier that’s not too large and matches the artistic theme of the game, bringing some of the World of Warcraft cartoony art style alive on your table top. It really is a pretty slick looking treasure chest model... when viewed from afar*. The dice set contains both blue and red dice for assigning damage to your alliance or horde allies, and two 10-sided dice (one 1-10, the other 10-100) which work well in tandem to assign damage to your hero. In other words, the product does what it says it does without any major usability gripes.

The Bad Points
Aesthetically the dice are somewhat lacking. Sure the blue and red colors match the theme of the Alliance and Horde faction branding, but the dice font is the same for each. It certainly would have been nice to have each side take on some personality–with the alliance side all proper cursive and bordered by doilies, and the Horde side all rough edged, or sloppily drawn in the sand with a stick. Definitely feel like they missed a key theme point here.

And Upper Deck finally decided on a font that is pretty generic and branded with over-decorating curls and dots. The end result looks entirely un-WoW and more like mr JRR Tolken himself squeezed these things out while penning a haiku in elfish script. They’re not too horrendous, but they’re also not that great either.

Finally there’s the chest, which – as we said – looks good from afar. But it’ll mainly rest up-close to you while your playing some WoW TCG gaming goodness, and from that distance it looks slightly cheesey. Worst yet, with the dice within the whole things makes a horrible rattling noise that shouts "Dork for sale!!" as you walk down public streets on your way to your gaming session.

Conclusion
The World of Warcraft TCG Damage Dice are a cheap little product, and it does what it says it does. But with lackluster dice the prize of this purchase is the treasure chest itself, and even that has some usability problems which rattle us to the point we’re hesitant to pick this as our dice carrier of choice.
